  • We recently ran into a situation where we got an update to NX and the new version physically couldnt model a part we had designed. The part was very specifically designed around its aero features. Our CFD PhD said itd take him 3 months to determine the impact to the features.

I sat down with one of the other engineers, we ran through every scenario possible, ran it all through 1d flow solver models, and determined worst case scenario (which we were certain wasnt going to happen) was 7 degree F change to the metal temperature. When we’re talking metal temps 1200F+, 7 is insignificant.

We came to that conclusion in 4 hours and told the team to keep going with what NX could do.

  • Brookville Indiana.

Got busted drinking a beer while canoeing. While doing my community service, the locals told us the bend in the river with the guy drinking at a picnic table was actually a cop. He cheers every boat going down the river and if you cheers back, he radios you description down river to his buddies and they pull you out of the river.

There was another group in our “substance abuse class” that said they were camping and lit a joint around the camp fire and the local police came out of the woods in tactical gear and night vision goggles to cite them.

    Fuck that place

  • I work in aerospace engineering and i hesitate to hire PhD. In my experience, PhD always want to find the best engineering solution and cant, dont, or wont bother to understand the business implications of budget and schedule. They simply cant say, “good enough,” and move on. They always need 1 more study, or to so the 1 month model instead of the 1 day hand calc because it gives a more accurate answer, and theyre a pain in the ass to manage. Sometimes all management needs to understand is directional trends to make a decision

  • The highest functioning time of my life i did something similar to this. I was getting my MBA while finishing my senior engineering project. My engineering team wanted to meet before they went to their internships, so we were getting together at 630 am. I also had night classes that started at 6pm.

Id meet with the engineers in the morning, then crank out all my engineering work, then go to sleep around 1-2 pm and sleep til 5pm, then head to classes, and do my MBA work until about 2am then sleep til 6am.

I wasnt working constantly, i had free time and play time, but sleeping 2x a day for ~4 hours at a time was AMAZING for me. I wish I could find a way to do that again

  • Ive gotten over itnas best i can. The worst is when i cook something, and she decides thats not what she wants, so she cooks something else for herself.

But she also gets upset that she does most of the cooking. Like yeah no shit. I dont need praise from you for everything i do, but less negative reinforcement would go a long way.

Therapy is helping though. I can hear it in the way she talks to our kids about life and how to treat others. So the realization is coming through

My wife hates that she “always has to pick the restaurant,” when we go out. I cant make her realize she shot down my first 3 suggestions before asking what she wanted. Yes you pick because everything i suggest you dont want tonight and ill eat everything.

  • Its not about spending money, its about anticipation and excitement. It turns something that people enjoy like watching sport, and gives a personal investment. It goes from, “id like carolina to win” to “it means something to me if Carolina wins.”

People who are addicted to gambling arent gambling to buy things. Theyre addicted to gambling. Theyre gambling so they can gamble more. Its like people who are addicted to drugs. Eventually the soft stuff doesnt hit like it used to, and the need bigger doses or harder drugs. They need to win more money, so they can gamble more money.

  • Are you insinuating that they should just change lanes regardless of if its safe? Two lanes going different speeds, cant match the speed the lane next to you because theres too much traffic, just fuck go for it?

“I had my turn SIGNAL on. Told you I was coming! Wasnt asking!”

The car changing lanes is at fault for any accident or damage, and can even be cited for an unsafe change even if they dont cause an accident.

Please drive safe and not like an entitled asshole.

  • Right there with you.

Wake up at 530. Get myself ready. Wake the kids up. Get the kids ready and fed. Out the door by 720 to get then to school then me to work by 830. Work until 5. Drive home, an hour if traffic sucks.

On a good day, my wife beats me home and has dinner going. An hour to 1.5 hr family time before kids get ready for bed. Get them down, clean the kitchen from breakfast, to-go lunches, and dinner. And its 10pm.

How are we supposed to get by?

  • Exactly. I dabble in competitive assessment and the amount of times weve got competitors data because they didnt flatten a file is astounding. The one we try every time with moderate success is checking every picture to see if you can “uncrop” it. So many times the rest of the picture is actually in the file and the crop is just for display purposes. Most of the time the rest of the photo is useless, but ill never forget the time we got the whole process map for their upcoming production schedule

  • I have to disagree with the group interview part. There are definite uses for it, especially when you work on something that absolutely demands collaboration. You can pretty quickly see who will dominate a discussion or try to do everything themselves, and who will give everyone a fair shake. If the company cares about their culture and not just raw talent, they can learn a lot from group interviews. It also helps if youre hiring A LOT of people.

My company hires 100+ college graduates every year. Group interviews are an essential part of the process. I still work with some of the people in my group interview from 15 years ago

  • The space before the ! Is a habit i picked up from auto correct. When i was adopting auto correct, my phone would only recognize . And space as a trigger for some reason (i grew up on t9 with no chat history, so i was there from the beginning). So i would hit space, then ! So I didn’t have to fix the word. Just left the space in. Now its just habit on my phone to space before i !
