I like using it to setup github stuff and save time, like I needed to use rembg, I know you can setup terminal scripts as apps so if you open an app it runs the script. Had it set up a basic app to open videos with, create a folder using ffmpeg and turn it into an image sequence then run through that folder using removebg and/or depth anything (have added options for vectorizing, splats, etc.), afterwards sticying the image sequence back together to the original format, bringing back the audio. I was already doing this with comfyui before I realized they could be installed seprately be run through terminal commands, so I tried to get ai to set this up.

Took about 5 minutes and a penny or 2 using deepseekv4flash with hermes. At it’s core, it’s hella simple, it’s just running existing programs rather than coming up with how to do all the tasks itself. I technically didn’t need it and could manually type these terminal commands myself or figure out how to automate it, but ai setting it up means it actually got done and saved me hours of time.

After noticing most converters are frontends for ffmpeg and most downloaders yt-dlp, I realized you can easily make a gui for anything using the terminal with ai.

I dont miss paying extra just because its a local shop and they get to gouge

I don’t see how ai being used by the same software dev would lead to worse work, if they use it correctly on a task by task basis in cases where it doesn’t need a lot of context/memory that keeps getting overwritten. I feel like they 100% use it as autofill or for structure that they check through while the companies claim it’s just straight up aigenerated with no human input to boost their stock value.

Davinci resolve may crash, it worked fine on arch but on bazzite it freezes my pc when loading projects

On the gaming side obv there are the games that won’t function without anticheat like wrc, iracing, f1, etc. No game pass ofc.

I still wouldn’t swap back to windows and I barely use it, maybe once a month if I really want to use something not on Linux.

Main downside is lack of piracy. Houdinifx should work fine on linux natively, but lacks a crack. So even if the paid software does work, if you pirate to use this stuff as a hobby than you’ll have to swap to something like Blender/Inkscape that is free and works on linux. Only crack I’ve found was for Davinci Resolve.

Linux has plenty of free and capable alternatives for paid software, I like that it has me using Foss more. Went from learning Houdini + Davinci to just sticking with Blender for my hobby visuals, not mad about it, prefer that I was forced to focus on one.

The pros just outweigh the cons, overall faster, 90% of the time im just using a web browser so compatibility isn’t really an issue, that works fine. I love being able to actually customize my computer, desktop environment, etc. and feel like I have complete ownership over my device. Swap my file manager or whatever, I think anyone who has jailbroken their phone in the past would really get the appeal of linux instantly. It almost feels like using cydia when using gnome with extensions or flathub, but better.
