Yeah not a problem at all for many. The ineffective remote workers are the same ones ineffective in the office, the ones on 15-minute side chats in the cube rows (loud of course) every hour. Great collaboration on the latest sportsball match, glad we were able to bring that back.

We actually have the recommendation too: oif you need to do something like sign for a package, let a contractor in for an hour to fix something, etc, then use a vacation day (with 2 weeks prior notice, of course). The flexibility goes both ways though, “can you do this quick thing Wednesday night”?now gets escalated to find approval for after hours work. Payroll/HR is not very flexible or responsive.

Even before COVID/WFH, this was the case of being spread out. CEO basically eviscerated on town halls, with a dead-eye blank stare in reaponse, then continues to champion RTO in the face of direct conflicts of their own words.

There aren’t enough cubes for the full timers, there aren’t enough conf rooms or other reservable meeting spaces, there isn’t distribution of needed equipment (headsets with ANC, decent mics or computers that can do noise supression without making the computer uselessly slow.

Mentioning these things are ignored though. The CEO and others continue on. Performing remote work for maintenace, patching, etc. outside business hours got a lot more obnoxious to “the business people”, now that we seek approval for outages during business hours to do the work inthe office, as mandated.

Playing the “I need everything handed to me on a platter or I don’t lift a finger” mentality is fine I guess.

Yeah, we’re in a similar boat with new CEO, RTO, etc. The increased collaboration is amazing: now instead of video calls, we have in-person in a cubical video calls because our team and department is scattered across multiple physical locations. Additionally, the increased collaboration from non-team “pop-ins” is a much-needed break from doing the work we’re brought in to do. Not tomention, all of the systems we manage are now much closer in case of emergency: colocated the same 50+ miles away or “cloud”. Maybe /s maybe I’m pro-CEO.

They’re also more affordable…

My OpnSense is a VM on some n100 mini PC under proxmox. Regular reboots haven’t had a need to attach a monitor in years, or manually hit the proxmox webui for anything like that.

If you skip passing through NICs, virtio can work just fine (1 Gbps NAT throughput on 1G intel nics). For me, this is to have the option of adding a 2nd opnSense or whatever alongside (segmentation or just prepping replacement or stuff like that). I also run small core services (dns) on the miniPC as additional containers or VMs.

Especially for a small list, 3-4, that you actually need to check, what’s the actual issue? Open list of 400, ctrl+f for the few names you care about, move on.

I would go with the separate AP route unless your firewall device is conveniently located and want to add a wireless card to whatever firewall box. You’ll need something new for wireless anyway once you plop the firewall in front of the modem.

Used enterprise APs can be good value. Unifi is super easy, reasonably priced, and you can run the controller/management thing as a container on your proxmox for localamagemrnt. Then probably ly anything supported by OpenWRT you can find cheap. Their hardware db might be helpful for comparing models/features in general.

Power for AP can use a poe injector at the switch or AP side of the run. Or whatever power adapter (many “APs” still have some DC power).

Cable runs along baseboards is fine. You can get cable channels and have it look super neat. Way cheaper, there’s little nail in cable rings for exactly that too. Pick a cable color that matches, or paint the channels. If there’s decent coax run all over the house, you could do adapters to avoid a cabling job.

Some random (GMKtek?) N100 dual nic thing runs my opnSense (VM on proxmox) at 1Gbps throughout, through I have minimal filtering applied now. I haven’t tested wireguard/VPN throughput or anything heavy though.

Switch you need anything managed for the VLANs. “Smart” or “Lite” I think get thrown around a lot too for basic managed. If you’re into labbing, again the used business/enterprise can get any range of features. Just have to deal with the noise/power/heat.

Edit: run pihole or adguard home as a container, then have that as the dns given by the current router/dhcp. Should help with filtering until you have something in-line.
