Technology@lemmy.world•A Developer Accidentally Found CSAM in AI Data. Google Banned Him For ItEnglish
21·9 months agoIt is a terrible headline. It can be debated whether it’s intentionally misleading, but if the debate is even possible then the writing is awful.

3·9 months agoThere is, but there is a difference between not admitting you’ve broken a law and impeding an investigation into whether you broke the law or destroying evidence.
The particulars are going to be very important in this case. It’s also possible they have no case and they’ll just use the legal system to torture him, ruin his life, and waste his money then drop the charges before it ever sees a judge.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What’s a graphical piece of software you wish existed or was better?
1·9 months agoI didn’t realize it was back in active development. It seemed to be abandonware for years.
That’s awesome. I’ll have to test drive it. Thanks.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What’s a graphical piece of software you wish existed or was better?
3·9 months agoWriting screenplays. Movie scripts. At it’s most basic, you can write it in any text editor, and you can format it in markup.
But, because the formatting is very specific and there are a lot of ways a screenplay gets analyzed and parsed they’re mostly done in a dedicated software. The biggest and most industry standard is called Final Draft.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What’s a graphical piece of software you wish existed or was better?
2·9 months agoI would love a good WYIWYG desktop screenwriting software.
Writing fountain markup just doesn’t work for me. it’s hard to explain, and sounds precious, but if my brain is in markup mode it’s not in creative mode and vice versa.
Some of the ok ones from the past have been abandoned.
I bought a pro license of fade in which is supposed to be available for Linux but it won’t install and support didn’t solve it. So I have to work exclusively from my Windows machine… Which I don’t love doing.
Linux is still a difficult environment for creative work.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Does it ever bother some of you that "I'm switching to Linux!" is just more of a way to appear rebellious than actually committing to the choice?
3·10 months agoThere will always be some percentage of users that Linux just isn’t for, and some users that fall in love.
In my opinion the motivations that convince them to try Linux are irrelevant. What’s important is that the general trend is more users sticking with it.
IMO I couldn’t care less if people dual boot, we’re still have a use case for Windows. I have a Windows machine myself.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Open Source Developers Are Exhausted, Unpaid, and Ready to Walk AwayEnglish
3·10 months agoWell that’s kind of what I’m getting at. How many times does that happen before everybody just goes back to using GPL, MIT, etc…

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Open Source Developers Are Exhausted, Unpaid, and Ready to Walk AwayEnglish
4·10 months agoI’m all for ethical licensing, and defensive licensing, but we’ll likely end up with an unmanageable soup of various licenses that everyone is nervous about misinterpreting. We lose efficacy and everyone will just default back to the same handful of licenses we’re currently using.
I think unless it was a small number of crystal clear alternative licenses with broadly agreeable terms, we’d get chaos, followed by complacency.

Memes@lemmy.ml•So many people wants us dead because we wants a better world for everyone
12·10 months ago- I didn’t ask a single question about communism.
- The question that you originally responded to was IMO about early socialism and revolution. It assumes that people have something to give (besides labor) and you picked up on that when you referenced robbing.
- You’ve moved the goalposts. First you conceed that yes there will have to be “theft” (your word not mine), then when I agreed with you (while not being so judgey as to call it theft), you pivoted to “no, we only start counting what happens after we’ve seized power. Everything before that doesn’t count” (paraphrasing of course).
- I agree with you that if you laid out a timeline and point to where the economy would be reorganized, it comes after seizing everything at gunpoint. Obviously you can’t reorganize till you’ve taken ownership. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen.

12·10 months agoI’m not taking a normative position here. I’m not saying anything about morality, or good guys and bad guys. I’m offering up moral frameworks to justify those actions. My takeaway from Robin Hood wasn’t that he was the villain.
I just don’t get why you’d act like the idea is NOT to take from the ownership class at gunpoint when that’s the whole idea. None of the rest of it works unless you do that. Just say it with your whole chest. Don’t bitch out.
That’s the singular aspect I’m judging.

Memes@lemmy.ml•So many people wants us dead because we wants a better world for everyone
37·10 months agoThat’s a bit of a cop out. “There’s no Robin Hood at that specific point because it’s already been taken at gunpoint by the time we dole it out”.
That doesn’t erase the fact that they’re very much is a Robin Hood figure with a gun. And if you want to seize everything at gunpoint You should at least be up front about it.
If your point is true and right in virtuous you do not need a spin on it.

Memes@lemmy.ml•So many people wants us dead because we wants a better world for everyone
39·10 months agoThat’s a fine perspective to have. But it is the textbook definition of robbing someone at gunpoint.
They have something of value that you want, you don’t want to exchange said value for it, so you take it by force… at gunpoint.
Maybe there’s a moral justification for that. Maybe you think they don’t deserve it, or you need it more, or you think their ownership of it represents it’s own form of theft… But they’re definitely getting robbed at gunpoint.

39·10 months agoThat’s a pretty rose tinted view. It is, generally speaking, “collectivized” at gunpoint.

Technology@lemmy.world•Valve Announces New Steam Machine, Steam Controller & Steam FrameEnglish
211·10 months agoI’m rabidly pro-consumer about most things but I struggle with how we define a market when we talk about steam. In order for steam to be a monopoly you have to drill down through super categories of software sales and then video game sales, to the platform level.
If you look at all digital delivery video game sales they still don’t have a monopoly. You don’t have to deal with steam to play a video game. It’s only PC video game sales where they are close to a controlling market share.
But Steam has far less power over PC gaming than Apple, Sony, or Nintendo do over their respective platforms. Gamers and Devs basically HAVE to deal with those companies to have access to their markets.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is self-hosting becoming too gatekept by power users?English
2·10 months agoMy experience is that runtipi turned docker into an app store. The technical barriers to entry have never been lower. There are so many helpful voices out there that I’ve never really had to ask anyone a unique question because someone else has typically asked whatever I need to know and been answered.
I do think there are very reasonable arguments to be made that when you are opening a server containing your personal data, to outside access, you probably should be cautioned about your technical limitations. Even if it’s not pleasant to hear.
I honestly don’t think it’s a great idea for most people (myself included) to casually dabble in server administration. There’s a pretty big margin for error. Unfortunately it’s the only private solution for the time being. I don’t trust anyone else.

I will never understand why users don’t like client side decorations. I get why developers might dislike it. But the title bar is Gnome is functional.
I love KDE but every window having a big, windows 95 ass, useless bar doing nothing but wasting screen space feels so old and clunky. No one needs that much handle on a window.
