  • I used to work at a company that processed business-end taxes.

I’m going to make my American compatriots very uncomfortable - I’ve very possibly seen your full social and address info. We handled about a third of all business taxes. I don’t care to use any of it, cuz I also got wage info. Y’all broke. (Same)

because the company I worked for processed your taxes. And your HR people are garbage and don’t know how to do their job.

I cannot tell you how many times I had to request my IT team to scrub files from our retention policy because your shitty HR sent it to me in cleartext to troubleshoot instead of through our encrypted box.

  • I read something a while ago speculating that black holes, and thus the singularity and infinity problems inherent with their existence, may not actually exist.

Rather, they were proposed to be basically this, stars which are super dense, and do cause light to fall back into them, but rather than reaching a point of infinite density, the stars themselves lie just beyond the event horizon, so we can’t see them. Totally normal physics, just super hugely massive objects.

They called them gravetars, I believe.

Edit: gravastar, it turns out. The paper I read was something more recent than 25 years ago, however…

Honestly, linux for me (yes I know where I am). Love the software and options, but holy shit is the fanbase incredibly opinionated and full of condescension about it. Also they don’t know how to shut the fuck up about it, and constantly bring it up where it doesn’t belong. Like its a personality trait to them or something.

  • I wonder if second-sleeping would help you.

You go to bed pretty early, like within a couple hours of sunset early, let yourself wake up naturally around midnight, stay awake doing low-key activities (sex, have a snack, read a book by candle light, talk to your bedmate if they are up, etc. basically candle-light-or-darker activities, a low-wattage warm white bulb on a dimmer does nicely, as do flickering candelabra bulbs) then around like 2-3, fall back asleep until a bit after dawn.

Thats the sleep pattern humans had, as far as we can tell, for all of history before the invention of artificial lighting (its mentioned so casually, with zero explanation, in historical documents as to just be the de facto experience), and its a pattern a lot of people naturally fall back to, but with improper timing so they don’t make it to the second sleep phase, and just end up with a dysfunctional rhythm that has them waking at 4. Or they fully fall into the pattern and feel great, like my retired aunt, but are worried because it’s “not normal”.

  • I got sick of the price gouging so I got a bidet for $25 and a pack of 60 cotton washcloths for $30, and other than for guests and such, I just don’t use TP anymore. If I’m wiping after a bowel movement, it goes into the laundry and isn’t used again until washed (sanitary cycle with bleach). So each cloth is used for a day at most.

I know that probably sets off the squick for a lot of people, but it is basically the same soil level as worn underpants (and way less gross than cloth diapers!), since the bidet takes care of the actual mess, so it just doesn’t bother me, and in the long run saves a ton. Extra bonus, I never run out!

  • If this one was built like the one I took down, some, maybe all, of those boards on the bottom run into the structure itself for support, and those are beefy boards, especially on their side like that. Mine was supported with those and diagonal supports just to prevent sag.

Id guess they are replacing ground-tied supports, and those are just to keep the small bit of pull from causing damage to the roof and stuff while they swap them. Just long enough for the photo.

That or its completely floating and the boards are just for a laugh.

  • I rub my chin against their heads in the same motion as licking would produce. They seem to interpret it as grooming behavior, as they’ll start grooming me back when I do it, whether or not they know I’m not actually grooming them. Well, the one tries to shove her nose up my nose when I do it, but close enough.

  • I’m not who you replied to, but this is a stupid take.

My area doesn’t have public transit to speak of, its semi-rural small town, and everything is in another town, so I’m forced to drive. Everywhere around here is like this. I explicitly do not have the option to move to a more urban area because I live in a very low cost of living area, which means very depressed wages, and I genuinely cant afford to move, much less live somewhere with walkable infrastructure or decent public transit, without better wages first. Because no, getting rid of everything and starting over isn’t an option, nor should it have to be.

And I didn’t choose to be here in the first place, either. When you are born into a very low cost of living area, you often get stuck there or can only move somewhere even further behind, because wages are so depressed you can’t save enough to get into a better area. The only way you get out is if you can land a good job before moving, which is insanely difficult, since remote work usually scales to the local wages, and who can afford to travel for in-person interviews?

Just move is easy to say when you can bring home more than you pay in bills, or have enough in savings to cover a few months until you find work or whatever, and its really easy to say when you already live in an expensive area. But its not actually a practical option for many of us.

So idk about that other person, but yes, I’m fucking tired of being told to just move if I don’t like how things are. Condescending out-of-touch bullshit, is what it is.

  • This reminds me of the dude who built a computer that technically runs doom inside satisfactory or factorio (I think satisfactory).

I’m struggling to find the video now, but he wrote a ton of optimization code to make it run faster, because it’s painfully slow. I think the video was sped up 1,000x or so just to show it was, in fact, playing.

  • The last time I went under, I was talking to the nurses about the equipment in the room and stuff and the last thing I really remember is asking what drug they gave me, and when I learned it was fentanyl I was like “oh, this is fentanyl? It’s pretty nice. I can see why it’s a controlled substance, yeah.”

I’m entirely sure I continued to be annoying though, even if I don’t remember it. Mostly because they don’t tend to bother trying to get me to count, they just kept me chattering. Same thing when they wake me up. I tend to be… “helpful”… removing monitor pads and such and slurring my way through asking how it went, if I gave them any trouble, and when I come around a bit more, asking if they amputated the wrong limb (I’ve never had a limb removed).
