Xbox/PlayStation/Nintendo don’t have monopolies within the console space.

Also (and this seems stupid to me), having a more open platform can open you up to antitrust lawsuits. In the Epic vs Google and Epic vs Apple lawsuits, apple was ruled to be fine to have a closed app store, but Google was rules to have an illegal monopoly on Android, despite it being the more open platform.

Basically Valve having the Steam Machine be an open platform (or being sold as a PC which is expected to be open) while steering Steam use could be considered more of a monopoly issue, than if they released a stripped down Steam only “console” and advertised it as such.

Presumably PC games are considered their own market, separate enough from console games. It honestly seems murky reasoning to me, but I would imagine valve would be cautious about it since they’re currently facing monopoly lawsuits.

I’ve also read speculation that selling it at a loss could contribute to antitrust lawsuits against them. Basically if they sell gaming PCs below cost, and the gaming PCs incentivize Steam use over other platforms, there would be an argument that Valve was using their 30% sales cut to sell hardware others can’t compete against, to further cement their monopoly. This would be partially countered by the open nature of the device, but not fully since it would still “steer” common users towards steam over other platforms.

This isn’t an issue for console makers because there are multiple competing consoles with valid market share.

To be fair, windows hibernates a lot without telling the user (hibernates when shutting down, hibernates after sleeping too long). Hibernating when shutting down was largely meant to help with slow boot times on HDDs, and it maybe shouldn’t be default now that everyone is on SSDs that both boot faster and receive more wear from hibernating.

Normally sleep wouldn’t affect it, because it just keeps the ram powered and doesn’t write to the SSD.

However I think windows will quietly hibernate if the computer has been asleep too long. At least on laptops it will automatically hibernate after a few hours of sleep, or after a % of battery is used.

That’s definitely costing them more than running it on their own hardware, but it doesn’t mean AI is costing them more than the AI startups. Anthropic for example is already paying SpaceX 1.25 Billion a month for compute, and has agreed to pay Google 200 billion over the next 5 years for access to Google’s compute and TPU chips.

Google’s deal with xAI specifically lets them terminate the deal with 90 days notice after the end of the year. Google is also investing heavily in building new data centers with their hardware. I’m assuming this deal means they’ve eclipsed their current TPU capacity, and are just looking for a short term bandaid until they can catch up with their new constructions.

They have big plans to build more data centers for themselves, so they definitely want more compute than the have access to right now. But even if they’re paying more to rent xai compute, they’re still paying less overall for hardware/access than their direct AI competition.

Honestly Google is likely to beat openAI and Anthropic as things are.

OpenAI and Anthropic have to buy/rent their hardware from Nvidia, while Google is making their own TPU hardware. Google’s hardware costs on AI is way lower, every dollar they spend on it goes a lot farther.

And unlike the other two, they’re already a profitable company. They’re making record profits right now. They don’t have a desperate need to figure out how to make back billions on their AI models, they can just keep offering Gemini at a comparatively cheap price and wait for anthropic and open AI to bankrupt themselves.

It’s pretty and I really like how functional it is, but some recent updates have changed how some of the config files work requiring changes. It’s an inconvenience I’m willing to put up with though.

I think so, but it’s spread among different menus and flags. Plus if even if you disable it, it’s still there, one of the origin options sounds like it has it fully removed from the code.

Something I’ve realized is that a lot of management for big publicly traded companies doesn’t care about any long term success of the company. They just want to turn a quick profit for a year or two, and then move on to a different company with a severance package and a raise. They will gladly steer a company towards ruin if it makes for a better financial quarter.

Apparently it’s contracted braille.

Contracted (Grade 2) braille is used by more experienced braille users. It uses the same letters, punctuation and numbers as uncontracted (Grade 1) braille but adds a series of special signs to represent common words or groups of letters, a bit like a kind of shorthand.

Books, magazines and other information tends to be produced in contracted braille, to cut down on size. Contracted braille produces much less bulky books and magazines.

This do not touch tag is a 3d print, the print creator says they made it using a braille translator website. Other braille “Do Not Touch” tags use some different braille letters for parts, and I don’t know enough about it to tell what the difference is. (edit: it’s contracted braille)

My main point was that even if Plex is the best solution, the $750 lifetime fee was enough for me to put up with some inconveniences of Jellyfin even if it wasn’t as easy.

Not saying Jellyfin is better than Plex, but Plex has to be a lot better for the price increase to be justified.

I know you’re just trying to make a point, but in case you’re serious:

You can’t install tailscale because Roku is a closed device, so your best remaining options are:

1. Use a Raspberry pi, old phone, or another device on the network to gateway, using Tailscale’s subnet routing feature.
2. Buy a google TV device instead, which will support Tailscale. Cheaper ones cost $20, with 4k ones starting at $25. Will save you $725 compared to the Plex lifetime subscription

Tailscale was suggested above as an easier alternative to setting up a reverse proxy. If tailscale isn’t a good option, then I would push forward with getting a reverse proxy setup.

I’m willing to work past a lot of shortcomings when the alternative is $750. Plus anything learning how to overcome those shortcomings will have benefits beyond just setting up jellyfin.

OpenAI is failing to monetize their model, is falling behind on Claude on benchmarks, can’t compete with Google on pricing/costs, is struggling to retain talent, and people don’t trust Sam Altman.

Unless something major changes, it really seems like we’ve passed the peak of OpenAI’s trajectory and it’ll be mostly downhill from here.
