    The Mermaid

I signed onto a sailing ship

My very first day at sea

I seen the Mermaid in the waves

    Reaching out to me

“Come live with me in the sea,” said she

    "Down on the ocean floor

And I’ll show you a million wondrous things

    You’ve never seen before"

So over I jumped and she pulled me down

    Down to her seaweed bed

    On a pillow made of a tortoise-shell

    She placed beneath my head

She fed me shrimp and caviar

    Upon a silver dish

From her head to her waist it was just my taste

But the rest of her was a fish

'Cause her hair was green as seaweed

Her skin was blue and pale

Her face it was a work of art

I loved that girl with all my heart

I only liked the upper part

I did not like the tail

But then one day, she swam away

So I sang to the clams and the whales

"Oh, how I miss her seaweed hair

And the silver shine of her scales"

But then her sister, she swam by

    And set my heart a-whirl

Cause her upper part was an ugly fish

But her bottom part was a girl

Yes her hair was green as seaweed

Her skin was blue and pale

Her legs they are a work of art

I loved that girl with all my heart

And I don’t give a damn about the upper part

'cause that’s how I get my tail

  • Only on my TV, where my family watches youtube through our PS4. Old kids shows and taskmaster and the like. It’s incredibly obnoxious— ads play when you open the video, and if you want to simply restart it move to the correct place it’ll play the ads again, and the ads can be 60 seconds long each time. They also pop these unskippable ads up at the most obnoxious moments in the videos.

The “next ad” button often does bring the time-to-skip down by ten seconds or so, at least. Still obnoxious. But I’m not sure about a better way to access YouTube and Disney+ and Prime Video etc etc on the tv from one device, and, well, I have a 4 year old, so doing without is not much of an option.

  • Technically, they have a very short distance to climb if they wanted to: just give the battery (or preferably multiple batteries) to an independent 3rd party to test to their hearts content. If they aren’t full of shit, that’d clear things up in an instant. If someone can show their claims are true, that’s all they need.

If they are completely full of shit, then there’s no no way out of the hole. I think this is unlikely given the carefully selected tests they’ve already released— they have… something. It likely isn’t an entirely non-existent product appearing only on paper.

If they are only partially full of shit, in that they have a battery that is decent or better than current batteries but not totally fulfilling their claims, then it’s a moderate hole to climb out of. Some egg on the face, but survivable.

If they are substantially full of shit, with batteries that are equivalent or worse than current batteries, then they’re gonna be laughed out of the market real fast. Probably mentioned in the same breath as Peter Molyneux, for similar reasons.

Taxes apply any time money changes hands. The existence of taxes is not the thing that should cause revolution. The hoarding of wealth by the wealthy is. They don’t get taxed because their money doesn’t change hands, and for many other reasons, not least of which is corruption and bribery.

  • I get that lemmy hates AI, and I’m not going to try to talk you out of that, but please stop repeating this factually incorrect myth. LLMs are not stochastic parrots, despite what you may have heard. And they do think… to a degree. Note that they’re by no means everything CEOs and tech bros want them to be, but if you’re going to criticize them, please do it accurately.

They do know the meaning of words, but only in relation to other words. It’s how they work. It’s not a statistical thing like word frequency patterns— they’re not doing the same thing autocomplete does. Instead, they’re doing math on words in a several hundred-thousand dimensional array where placement on this grid indicates the meaning of the word— one vector direction indicates plurals, another indicates rudeness or politeness, another indicates frog-like, another might indicate related to 1993 ibm pentium CPUs, etc, etc, etc. It developed this array via training on terabytes of text, but it’s not storing a copy of that text, nor looking it up, nor copying anything from it… it’s defining words based on how they are used, then doing math on it to figure out what is the most appropriate thing to say next— not the most likely thing according to statistics, the most meaningful based on the definitions of the words it understands.

They really do not copy and paste. They do use definitions. They do think about the words in a very real way.

They don’t apply logical consistency and fact checking. There are hacks to make them talk to themselves in a way that following the meaningful definitions of words will more likely lead to fact checking and logical consistency, but it’s not 100% fool proof.
