I haven’t maintained my personal website in ages. That, of course, means it loads instantaneously, in comparison to all these Library of Congress websites.

There’s several pieces of media I’ve consumed lately where on a second review, I can see: “This makes little sense. This is a lazy connection, this line could’ve been worded much better” yet it doesn’t matter since I still remember my heavy reaction on first viewing, and can see other strong reactions.

A big part of that is how well the story itself sets up for core moments, even if some of the pieces are clumsy.

I do think a lot of modern media embraces “unexpected death” tropes a bit too much. When done well, it can emphasize the harshness of a world and drive ambition to right things. Done wrong, it actually depletes the stakes because a lot of the motivation and interest was in saving the person that was just killed.

Breaking Bad, and Danganronpa V3, are some examples of where I felt the latter.

That said, it suspends belief sometimes when readers realize anyone in the main cast has plot armor. To me, part of that remedy is occasional deaths, but part is to just not invent frequent hanging-by-thread situations, and then frequent deus ex machina to exit them.

I kind of think car crashes could fit pretty well into my horror movie idea, Sanewashing; in which an amateur serial killer is clumsily killing people, but an overbearing sense of “normalcy” is preventing people from panicking or investigating, just viewing the deaths as tragedies rather than mysteries.

Something that could be thematic is to just have someone hear about a friend being killed, and be completely on edge; but then hear it was a car crash, and all tension releases.

I’m guessing most commentary will be about software, but there was an analysis I heard of, claiming that construction is one of very few industries across economic sectors that just hasn’t made any kind of efficiency advancements in decades. Most other systems follow some kind of workflow improvement, or inventions that significantly improve some part of the process. But home building has only gotten harder and more expensive for making the same homes as before.

Maybe we’re seeing the same in game development. You look at what games were made during PS360 on multiple odd architectures, low memory, and comparatively small teams, and see how much things are faltering since then.

Some of Shu Takumi’s games did a good job of building up foil characters; they seem just suspicious enough to convince viewers they’re the twist villain. But as it turns out, all their goals are noble.

AAInvestigations 2 had perhaps the best one though. Very little attention on the actions of the mastermind, but the few things they do stand out so it feels like you should’ve known, rather than feeling like a Butler Did It.

I kind of remember getting silently angry at media when I learn there isn’t a twist. Big bad, they fight, all ends, show’s over. What??

I at least like that a few pieces of Sonic media lampshade this.

In one episode of Sonic Boom (a show designed to be watched high by adults) he’s kidnapped by an aardvark that’s a rabid fan.

I might be a unique form of grump: I recognize we get gypped by modern streaming services, but I still appreciate that the internet gave us greater breadth of choice than old cable options.

There’s indie and foreign streaming services that cost a lot less than the Netflix oligopoly, yet people never even seem to look for those, and just turn to piracy as their form of protest. “I can’t live without this show, and so I’ll give these services my vote of confidence, as well as political ammunition to enact higher levels of internet traffic spying!” What a genius self-serving plan.
