The fault isn’t with docker though, they don’t add your user to the docker group, it’s an optional step the user needs to take.

Do other distros default to placing your user in the docker group though? That’s the issue here.

Yeah I just need to reinstall at some point, maybe try another distro.

It can be, but I never really run into any issues. Part of it is I’m more familiar with windows than linux I’m sure.

My linux desktop experience hasn’t been as good, I run it on my laptop since that’s more just a web browsing device than anything and it’s not critical if it breaks. The last 2 times I’ve updated Fedora it has broken the bootloader and that took me quite awhile to fix, I can’t figure out why it keeps happening as it’s a really standard install and doesn’t make any sense.

I also still can’t get HW acceleration working in any browsers, flatpak or directly installed, which has been extremely frustrating since I’ve never had to do anything on windows for it to work. There are no clear guides with one fix either, and it’s not something I should have to be fixing myself, it should work out of the box.

That takes a few minutes, it’s not like Linux doesn’t have stuff I’ve gotta spend time to fix too.

Majority yeah but the stuff that doesn’t work can be a serious time sink to fix.

Has it occurred to you that it’s not a tiny change for a lot of people?

It’s a bother but it can be limited somewhat via toggles and DNS blocking.

Not all of us just use our computers as a hobby, I don’t have the time to figure out Linux and make things run in wine or proton, and fixing things that break from updating that software is annoying.

It’s pretty decent! Huge learning curve coming from Fusion360 since it does everything so differently, but once I got the basics down I can do simple models at least.

I think a great test is grab a 5 year old budget phone with low screen resolution and slow CPU, and hand it to a few people with your app on it for a few minutes. See what they complain about or can’t figure out.

Lots of good options, but plain ol Fedora with KDE can look great and is reliable, or if you want something more experimental like omarchy then CachyOS would be good.

Restic is a good backup tool with encryption. Cryptomator is awesome but it doesn’t do backups, just storage.

How are you handling versioning and deleted files?

It seems like Restic would be a better option? It only backs up changed files and handles versioning, encryption, deduplication, and some fault recovery allready. You wouldn’t need all of the other layers like the export script and float.

My laptop has 8GB and Linux and its really not enough to actually do much IMO, it’s fine if it’s just a single browser open with a few tabs though.

The clock speed might result in a very small performance different under specific workloads. 8GB will result in performance issues basically everywhere with modern apps and websites.

I use a decent cloning tool like foxclone, dd isn’t really the right tool for that kind of thing IMO.

Yes generally around 1TB on cheap plans. That’s a ton of data though for streaming media, if youre moving more than that getting a higher tier VPS would make sense.

It costs a little but a VPS running Pangolin and Crowdsec is a decent replacement for cloudflare for hiding your IP and having some extra protection.

Most VPS are on 1Gbps connections, but even if it only has 100Mbps that’s plenty.
