Look, I get it. We’ve been fed a story about individual responsibility for generations. It’s hard to break free from that mindset.

I experience this myself when I see cigarette butts on the side of the path when walking my dog. “Fucking smokers!” is my first reaction. But then I remember that people who smoke are suffering from an addiction they were tricked into and the only thing they get out of smoking is poverty, sickness, and possibly death. On the other hand, the immoral corporations who sold them the cigarette butt lying on the ground have made a tidy profit of the smoker, as well as the trash that the company generated.

You make it seem like these desires arise spontaneously. Corporations have been using advertising in a systematic way since the 20th century to induce demand and shift behavior patterns of the masses.

With your logic, all business decisions can be laid at the feet of common people. “Yes, shrinkflation exists and is terrible, but it is for ordinary people, so they are to blame.” “Sure, companies sell bullshit insurance to consumers, but the people buy it, so it’s really the masses who cause it.” And so on.

Presumably the rent went to the government, which was considered as a stand in for the people, right?

We don’t use any parental controls. Our kids have always been very trustworthy. I disabled all Google parental spying and blocking for my son as soon as the age limitations would allow it. (My stepdaughter was under the thumb of her father’s monitoring for a long time. She had to face his wrath when she turned off location sharing with him on her iPhone… her second year of college.)

We had to brow-beat my son into getting a WhatsApp account so he could chat with his classmates (his actual friends use Signal, but WhatsApp is what group chats mostly use in Holland). 😅

That’s what my son’s school does.

We’ve had a mobile phones ban for students in the Netherlands for a few years now. Our kids have been scared away from social media by my wife’s ingestion of fear-based mainstream news and by my anticapitalist ranting, so it doesn’t really impact them. 🙈

Slightly better, since presumably adults at the school have mobile phones, instead of having to use the limited land lines.

The problem of being distracted in class can be solved by having two phones? Weird!

Also, any non-trivial system has failure modes that are not binary. Like, if your convertible car has the roof stuck down you can drive it, but you will be sad if it rains. So, is the car “up” or not? Similarly, if your site has writes offline for a database upgrade, but reads work fine, is it “up”?

The concept is just advertising and something that makes sense to senior management, but provides no actual useful metrics.
