Anyone I talk to about this agrees that the IP theft itself is not a problem but the difference in punishment between the big tech companies and the average person. If someone in a basement had made chatGPT or equivalent, they’d have been put in prison for life, or fined into oblivion. OpenAI does it and suddenly one of the richest companies in the world says “if anyone even thinks about suing or holding them to account we will defend them with our literal army of lawyers”. Then China does it and suddenly IP matters again.

Differentiator from projects like silver bullet seems to be the inclusion of a chatbot if I’m reading this correctly? Not something I want but if that’s how you work, go for it.


I have a FairPhone and the hardware is fine and very repairable (being able to replace the usb socket has saved me from buying a new phone). The android alternative e/os has a lot of criticism the launcher is awful, feels like a cheap Chinese knock off of iPhone-like interface but you can at least swap it out and it’s not as secure as something like graphene os. You’re making a tradeoff whatever choice you make.

The issue is the barrier to entry for creating shit PRs has almost vanished while reviewing those PRs for quality by a human being hasn’t, so it pushes undue burden on the maintainers. See blog posts by Daniel Steinberg (maintainer of curl) for example.

Tldr; we shouldn’t be idealistic, we should accept that LLMs stole from FOSS code, we should accept reality and instead of abandoning daddy GitHub we should ask them super nicely if they can pretty please open-source the training models trained on our stolen code.
I don’t understand how the author simultaneously holds the position “we should accept reality” and “GitHub/Microsoft will open up their models if we ask them to”.


I thought we were unique in this but frankly everywhere in the “western” world is talking about the same things. EU has chat control, Australia has similar efforts, USA aren’t pushing for privacy at all so it’s not a uniquely British problem.


How is what you’re describing different to what the author is talking about? Isn’t it essentially the same as “AI do this thing for me”, “no not like that”, “ok that’s better”? The trouble the author describes, ie the solution being difficult to change, or having no confidence that it can be safely changed, is still the same.

Mint is honestly your best bet. I installed it for my parents on their aging laptop and they’re allergic to the terminal and they’re getting on great with it. Requiring a password for administrative actions is generally a good thing for security but you could disable it (unfortunately the only way I know how is via the terminal!). I’m biased here because I’m a techy person but I’ve used Windows, macOS and Linux professionally for years and I always have to troubleshoot things. Windows, in my experience, has always been worse than the others because while Linux has very technical or terminal-based solutions a lot of the time, Windows official support generally tells you to “just reinstall or restore from a system restore point” which is such overkill for most problems. That or registry edits.


Bit of an alarmist headline here. The vulnerability has been patched in the most common clients (openssh) and it was because the protocol wasn’t being implemented correctly. To say that the SSH protocol “just got a lot weaker” is just not true.
