I agree. They are not just things we found in the dirt anymore.

There is a distinct difference in food science between processed food (anything that has been cut, or undergone any kind of process) and ultra-processed food (made of many different ingredients, many of which cannot be found in an ordinary kitchen, and undergone multiple processes). While the term is not perfect, it is still useful when talking in general terms.
Most plants we eat today were cultivated for centuries to be more nutrient and calorie-dense than the original plant.

science@lemmy.world•Reducing deep stomach fat can improve your brain function, Israeli scientists findEnglish
2·3 months agoI downvoted because the link goes to a israeli news website that also postes anti-palestinian propaganda type bullshit. If the same article was discussed in a more neutral, reputable source, please post that instead.
The recommendation is to do a combination of cardio, around 150 minutes a week with increased heart rate (or 75 minutes intense cardio) and weight training 2-3 times a week for optimal fitness. Even if you just want to become very good at running, some weight training is helpful. So the advice in this comic is accurate. However, doing anything is better than doing nothing so if just running is what makes you happy, do that and don’t stress.

science@lemmy.world•Surge in fake citations uncovered by audit of 2.5 million biomedical science papersEnglish
21·4 months agoSo they found non-existing references in 0.1% of 2.5 million papers examined, and only 0.01% contained more than 2 fake references. Their method also appears to have had a false positive rate for fake references of 7/10.
While the problem is concerning, and growing (fuck AI), 99.9% of papers are ok. We have always known we have to read every paper critically, now there is just an extra thing to look critically at.
In my experience, a way bigger issue is references that don’t actually contain or proof the information for which they are referenced.
I volunteer at a language cafe to help people with dutch conversation, while I’m learning french and living in France. I have so many embarrasing moments where I forget the dutch word for something. Even though I still speak dutch daily with my boyfriend/family.

Comic Strips@lemmy.world•The most shocking revelation
3·6 months agoIf my dog would ever talk I would explain to him in detail why our high salt diet with onions and avocado and chocolate would kill him and that giving him more than a lick of whipped cream gives him diarhea. Poor guy doesn’t understand that we deny him because we love him.
For me it is also any advantage I can get to keep up with my boyfriend. No competition, just hoping he feels slightly out of breath when I am panting for air. Unfortunately he is the weaker one in a group of bike friends too, so he also tries to optimize as much as possible.
I’m slightly convinced that for everyone under pro levels this is all just placebo. But I still shave my legs and if I had the money I would buy all the cool stuff.

science@lemmy.world•Low-carb and low-fat diets associated with lower heart disease risk if rich in high-quality, plant-based foods, low in animal productsEnglish
51·7 months agoThe title is very misleading. This study is saying that it does not matter if you do a low-carb or low-fat diet, it matters what the quality of the food is. Basically eat more plant-based high-quality food and less refined carbohydrates and animal fat. So go ahead and sprinkle olive oil on everything if it makes you happy.
