even in my own offline hobbies… lots of folks grandstand over social/political issues in the hobby and try to make people ‘pick sides’ so they can call them names. today i saw a post to a FB group I used for local events… demanding everyone boycott this company… that nobody uses anyway and isn’t even related to the hobby in question… it’s insane. and if you remove the post they cry foul and you are trying to ‘silence’ them and you’re on the ‘bad side’ of the issue.

and face it, the vibe of lemmy has changed substantially over the past few years, and it’s way more full of controversy-seeking nutjobs than it was 2-3 years ago. making any most with subtley and nuace on any issue here just gets you harassed and labeled and attacked, because dumbasses can’t see things as more complex than absolutely good/right, or absolutely evil/wrong.

truth is, generally when times are bad, people tend towards more extremist views. when times are good, more moderate viewpoints are more common.

gender quality seemed more reasonable in the 90s and 2000s, but it’s taken a huge dive at the same time economic inequality has exploded.

I’m older, but anecdotally, I miss gender interactions from the 2000s, things are way more hostile now even in my own demographic, and most women I meet now have way more traditional expectations than they did even 5 years ago, of me and of themselves. Shit is weird.

i never had like any reddit comment reported in like a decade… then around '22 all the sudden contrary or sarcastic comments became site-wide ban offenses. mostly because people would report you and the AI would ban you, and you had to argue and appeal to get unbanned.

contrarianism was normal and healthy part of the site for over a decade, now it’s considered harassment and assault by the AI admins.

This is educational policy in many places… that’s what’s terrifying. Students/parents were getting teachers fired over hearing things they didn’t like.

I wanted to go into education in 2010 or so… but started seeing this was where education was going… and decided to not waste my efforts on it. And yeah all the people making those decisions… were the type of people whose parents paid for their graduate school… and bought them condos… etc. Folks who didn’t live in the real world and though the real world should never be acknowledged because it made them feel bad about themselves and we must never allow anyone to ever feel bad!
