Damn I thought you were about to say Ubuntu gave you cancer
Exactly
Well yeah and cigarettes tell you not to smoke them
“No way to prevent this” says only distro where this regularly happens
It feels “official” and familiar to people. Hardly anyone has actually heard of Bazzite, Fedora, CachyOS or any of the other distros, so it seems scary to put them on their devices.

7·14 days agoYep thats the main one I’ve seen posted around. I’m sure their data is accurate but I’m not convinced it’s representative of the wider consumer market

Linux@lemmy.world•After Europe ditched Windows, China follows suit with its own home-grown Linux distrosEnglish
57·14 days agoConsumers may have left Windows for Linux somewhat but most are still stuck there as well.
I work in a STEM-heavy university. Nerds everywhere, and many are computer nerds. I only know one other person here that daily-drives linux out of the hundreds I work with. I am very sceptical of the consumer market share statistics.
Your earbuds when I take them out of my ass:
I think there’s definitely truth to this. Since the west de-industrialised and now largely deals in services, labour isn’t really viewed as production of things of value, but just something you do to get a salary. People are utterly alienated from their work and increasingly care less about the quality of the outcome or the society-wide impacts of changing labour relations.

Technology@lemmy.world•Linus Torvalds says AI has made 'huge' Linux kernel updates the new normalEnglish
102·21 days agoI don’t think many people are against the existence of LLM-based AI in general, just the way it’s being pushed currently.
In the hands of highly experienced and skilled people it can be very valuable - the issue is that it generally isn’t. Personally I think Linus has demonstrated that he’s more than capable of using it intelligently and responsibly.

Legitimately why is Georgian language like this. I swear this isn’t even close to being the weirdest thing about it
Yes, they are. In vast numbers.
Very large sections of the workforce are no longer adequately trained in their field. This was not the case before AI. They need to be weaned off gradually while providing proper training, like a recovering addict.
People have surrendered their critical thinking skills. Truth is, AI disappearing overnight really would be disastrous, because a huge portion of humanity is utterly addicted to it and incompetent without it.
A huge proportion (most?) of server infrastructure runs on linux.
