FWIW, I use the OpenBox install of Endeavour OS, with a few simple tweaks of my own. As far as I know OpenBox isn’t actively maintained, but it Just Works™.

I’m on EndeavourOS, too. I don’t see anything near that kind of memory drain, but I’ve been using window managers instead of desktop environments for a long time.

For ages I had old, poorly specced laptops, and the big DEs like KDE would quickly cap what memory I had for actual software. And I’m not even a gamer, this would be GIMP or a plain browser that would crash because of too little RAM.

Even now, with more memory and better CPU, I stuck to the habit of using a WM instead, and everything really just runs better. You do sacrifice some eye candy and built-in functions, but IMHO it’s worth the tradeoff.

It’ll even read the books for you so it can write more books you don’t have to read.

Impressive, they managed to find a decent OS under all that garbage?

I’m happy running Linux, but I think there are three possible outcomes for Atlas:

1. Microsoft’s legal department is going to come down on the project with the full legal weight of copyright laws, and tie developers’ efforts and energy up in red tape.
2. Microsoft will just quietly build obstacles into Windows updates that makes Atlas maintenance next to impossible, or just hard enough to wear developers out.
3. Atlas will just putter out on its own due to lack of interest, because users are either too complacent to abandon Windows or already eyeing more established alternatives like Mac or Linux.

Not as much as people clutch their pearls over a five pointed Fediverse logo…

Well, now you made one. Congratulations.

Maybe you need to look at the reasons you feel unsure about promoting the project. You seem very eager to get stars on Github (and let’s not get into the GH situation, nor “AI”, nor the fact that your open source project relies heavy on proprietary models).

I’d suggest you ignore the scoring system for the moment, and just write from your original enthusiasm about the project. Leave marketing to corporations that can afford marketers.

Stars and upvotes and likes are addictive metrics, and can have a deleterious effect when they don’t show. And yes, stars decide how high you rank on Github (see parenthesis above), but that’s for a later stage. It begins with writing the first post — and for that, again, congratulations 🙂

Fully agree with the last bit. And let’s be honest when we admit that there are “good use cases for AI and LLMs”. None of us here are doing protein folding or crunching other ginormous datasets for science.

Using Claude to write code you don’t have the chops to quality check… doesn’t really qualify. That’s just choosing convenience over safety. “Move fast and break things” as a service.

That’s the key point, isn’t it? OP’s question isn’t really as hypothetical as it’s phrased; you definitely can go on Amazon or eBay and find cheaper, Chinese knockoff parts.

But will they perform to the same standards as top name brands? Very unlikely.

Why a vote to switch up an existing community? The admins have proposed the [AI] tag to mitigate slop projects.

You said you wanted a community to post vibe coded projects, go ahead and set it up. I don’t see why it needs to be foisted onto c/self hosted, unless you have some vested interest in boosting sloppy mcslopface projects.
