Oh I see, thanks. I didn’t understand what OP meant by Wi-fi Direct, I was thinking it just meant going over the LAN via the router. So I guess this means a device making itself into a wi-fi hotspot with is own local IP address that can be connected to directly, right?

Try KDEConnect (or GSConnect for gnome). Clients for Linux, BSD, Android, Sailfish, iOS, macOS and Windows.

Instead of separate dedicated shape tools, in gimp you use the appropriate shape of Selection tool to create the shape(s), then you either add the fill and/or border of the style you want, or use ‘Stroke selection’ to choose from various draw/paint tools/styles. So for a circle you use the Ellipse Selection tool.

You can use any of the transformation tools, including Rotate, on the selection vs the image contents --you choose the tool option for which thing you want it to apply to. You can drag or enter a specific number.

(this is just information for anyone who wants to know how to do the things you mentioned. I’m not interested in talking about how good or shitty the programs are or comparing them)

Yes, I was ignoring that aspect because the subject was about consciousness. Of course that doesn’t mean the the subconscious isn’t also operating from a mental model or process, just because we’re not consciously aware of it.

I didn’t say a model of self was required, but just some kind of mental model–which is probably not the best way of putting it but I don’t know all the proper scientific terminology. Maybe it is, if you define consciousness as being aware of what is “self” vs. what is “not-self”. I’m not sure it is, at least in the simplest cases.

Plants (or at least the part of the plant being affected) can react to a stimulus, but I think that can easily be explained as happening through a mechanical and/or chemical reaction locally. I wouldn’t call that kind of stimulus a “sensory input”. If it was, then what would the sense organ or means of receiving or transmitting the sensory input be, and what would it be that receives or processes the input? There’s no nervous system or comparable structure.

Anyway no one can even define what consciousness really is. I just thought the comic’s view of consciousness was oddly specific and highly unlikely.

So they’re saying the cause/purpose of consciousness is to reduce all the input data into a way to communicate with other humans via speech? Weird. That also makes the strange assumption that only humans, or beings that need to communicate, would have consciousness.

It seems fairly reasonable to suppose that any organism with sensory inputs that can act independently (perceive its environment and interact with it) would have to have some kind of consciousness to operate through. IOW to interpret the input signals and form a kind of mental model out of them. Regardless of how simple or complex that consciousness may be or whether communication might be involved.

Personally when my toner runs out I will buy Brother toner to reward them. Even if it costs more than off-brands, it lasts so long it’s not like it would save me that much money per year anyway.

1. all the countries the US trades with were forced, in their trade agreements with the US under threat of losing the US market, to pass their own digital copyright anti-circumvention laws so that US big tech companies can seek rent and collect the personal data of citizens of those countries with impunity, and

2. Now that trump has imposed all these tariffs on them and violated the agreements anyway, there is no longer any reason for them to to keep those laws on the books, laws which only hurt their own people and help US tech companies. He explains retaliatory tariffs only hurt their own people, that the best response is for other countries to stop protecting US oligarch and repeal those laws, which will help their own entrepreneurs and citizens, and withhold billions in rent to the US oligarchs.

I was trying to answer OP’s question “isn’t that what volcanoes are” by clarifying that volcanoes are formed by the release to the surface of magma from the mantle. If they are now discovering there is also some core material mixed in with the lava in some volcanoes, that’s interesting and we might mention that as a minor component in those cases. But to say regarding material from the core, “that’s what volcanoes are” would be inaccurate. That would be some weird metallic-ass volcano if it was made from outer core material.
