I overall like it for entertainment. As far as I can tell, through the years of “scandals”, Linus doesn’t seem like a bad person. Just a person who means well but makes human mistakes sometimes.

I strongly feel the only reasons Linux is actually gaining traction right now are

A) proton/wine getting good enough interfaces for regular people to start using them (steam, heroic, hopefully bottles someday gets easier to use)

B) KDE making strides with their desktop envoronment.

C) flatpaks being easy to use and fairly reliable once someone learns to prioritize them

All still have a LOT of work to do with UX, but they are close enough to good that its less of a hurdle for new people to pick them up.

I ain’t write a pass for shit, the article I linked said crime is a by-product of desparation and reducing desparation will reduce crime, being poor is a cause of desparation so a-b-c. I don’t wamna type that all out because the middle piece didn’t matter for the sake of the message “reducing poverty reduces the crime rate”. Additionally, just because something has a traceable cause doesn’t mean its excused or OK, don’t draw that line on your own. I also didn’t mention police once, so I don’t wanna hear that either. That’s a different conversation entirely that I feel we both also have a very similar opinion on. It seems you really just don’t like the word poor being associated because you want to draw a line to me saying poor people are bad, but I’m not. I’m saying desperate people are more likely to take desperate measures. Doesn’t matter what class you’re in for that, but poor people are, hopefully unsurprisingly, a lot more likely to be in a desperate situation, and in there did I never say that this makes anyone a bad person nor did I excuse any behavior.

Tl;dr: Poor people commit more crime

It’s the natural order of things, but that doesn’t mean its acceptable or should be the norm. I think its a very grounded argument to say that reducing poverty by improving social safety nets and ensuring that the lowest paying jobs can actually support someone would then decrease crime.

I switched to Linux because the nvidia drivers on windows got so bad my GPU was crashing once every boot. On Linux I regularly have significantly worse performance (especially in VR) but its more stable. I’m fine with a lower fps rather than just getting kicked out of games when the driver crashes.

Would be nice if they worked on those performance issues, though.

You’re directing your hate on a group of people largely working overtime and underpaid to provide an essential service, and not the system that put both of you in a place to where you are contributing to society but not adequately rewarded for that hard work.

Storing and serving videos is expensive, they have to pay for it somehow. Either you pay directly or someone else pays for you (through an Ad). I don’t see why this is inherently a problem.

I can see arguments on if the specifics are a problem with how they’re going about it, but the fundamentals make sense.

The macbook Neo is a pretty powerful laptop, I wouldn’t say its a champion of limited computation software success.

Ah, thankfully I didn’t run into that one. I have a goxlr and they broke it for 2 weeks so I did a manual rollback until it was fixed, because having audio is kinda nice.

Yeah, that’s me comfortably sitting on Bazzite right now. There are definitely ways for it to improve, but I’ve only really ever had one issue in the last few months, and that was fixed the next week. I just get to use my computer, and it’s nice.

4/5 Linux builds I’ve used on steam run significantly worse than the windows build through proton or just crash.

Strong disagree. I know how to configure a Linux installation and I still refuse to leave bazzite because it just works and stays out of my way while keeping my system up to date. I also haven’t found anything I wasn’t able to do in it. The preinstalled apps and the flatpack app store have covered all of my daily use needs.

You knock it off, there are so many small issues a distro like bazzite fixes that kubuntu won’t have patches for out of the box. Discord screen sharing, for one.

Then in steam you have to direct steam to use proton for almost every game with a Linux build because almost none of them actually work correctly.

Also, if you’re directing the average joe to use the terminal, it’s too hard. Seriously. It needs a polished, self explanatory GUI. If the app store version of steam isn’t good enough, then its not a good distro to recommend. Even then an app store might be too hard, many people are used to downloading apps from their website, and that problem hasn’t been solved by many distros, either.
