Any genres in mind? Shattered Pixel Dungeon is a pretty fun one, IMO. I like Idle Fantasy for its vaguely RuneScape feel (though it’s largely text-based, so don’t expect much graphics) while letting you queue actions up for hours of letting the game run idly. 2048 is classic. Luanti (similar to Minecraft) is available on mobile but such a huge battery drain I haven’t played it much TBH. And UnCiv will let you play a game similar to Civilization. I have all those on e/OS (de-Googled Android fork) and as I recall they are all open-source and ad free.

I think, as a dedicated LLM hater, that calling AI a cult is overstating the case. But I will also point to the fact that some of the upper level drivers like Elon Musk are 100% motivated by Roko’s Basilisk, so.

It is a bit odd. I think maybe because people aren’t familiar with it, it comes off as a promotion? Maybe try editing something into the post body like “DreamWidth is a LiveJournal-like journaling site which sprung up in the wake of LiveJournal censorship in the late aughts. Its flagship site is still focused on an ad-free and user-focused experience, or host it yourself. Check it out if you miss the golden days of LiveJournal.”

It is actually a fork of FilePizza, which is a pretty solid tool but has its limitations. Like large files would fail, and there is no way to pause or resume a transfer if something goes wrong.

My personal thought as a lurker trying to learn enough through osmosis to start her own set-up is that hardware concerns are fine as long as they still relate to self-hosting in some fashion. “What hardware setup would be good for beginners looking to self-host a Google Drive alternative on a budget?” is self-hosting, fine, and the type of thing I would bookmark for my own reference. “Anyone have advice on cannibalizing an old laptop to DIY a mini PC?” would really not be self-hosting, even if your plan is to use the resulting mini PC to self-host a server.

I’d also be inclined to treat posts that are off-topic but have a selection of informative high-effort comments by locking them and sharing them to the appropriate community for further discussion there vs. removing them entirely.

If I had to paraphrase what happened, there was some (IMO polite) disagreement over the stringency of enforcing rule 3 and whether it was negatively impacting the community by removing posts that people worked hard to answer due to being more of a hardware-related topic, and then the previous mod abruptly made the people who offered the criticism moderators without any discussion on the matter with them first and then hasn’t been seen on Lemmy since.
