My old 8GB laptop runs amazingly well with an 8GB swap file and Zswap enabled. If you set up both with 16GB of RAM, your machine should be able to handle most anything easily.

I did this using a router to handle traffic for about a year between sites 240 miles apart. The only downside was it used a lot of bandwidth. Maybe it can be done with some IP cameras, but I expect they’d be expensive commercial models. OpenWRT compatible routers can be dirt cheap.

If your MIL’s router supports OpenWRT or you can replace it with one that does, you can use a VPN and PBR (Policy Based Routing) to your home router or server and do exactly what you want with any camera that supports RSTP (Real Time Streaming Protocol). That includes most cheap wired TP-Link cameras and plenty of others. PBR on the router at your MIL’s home would be used to route all traffic from camera IP addresses to your server.

I used Frigate software and Home Assistant for occupancy detection/alerts and Wireguard for transport. It worked perfectly but I eventually got around to adding 2nd server.

I’m no expert, but my Business Law professors were absolutely adamant about the fact that a minor can never execute a legal agreement and there are no exceptions.

Even if the parent leaves a contract out with a stamped envelope and tells their kid to sign it and mail it off, the contract is null and void. If my professors were correct and things haven’t changed, I can’t imagine a child can waive their (or their parents) rights by clicking a checkbox either.

You can also run it on your Linux box and check external IP via web page. Sites like https://myip.wtf/text provide it in plain text that can easily be used without accessing your router’s UI.

Instead of connecting via your external IP, consider setting up DDNS (Dynamic DNS). Most routers support it out of the box, it’s free (using a DDNS service like DuckDNS) and easy to set up. Once working you’ll connect via a static URL rather than an IP and when your external IP address changes, that URL will update automatically within a few minutes and direct you to the new IP.

Calibre’s ereader is quite good.

Roku, Android TV (ONN), Apple TV, etc. all have Hoopla support. The app doesn’t even have a way to browse titles, but if you know what you want to watch their app works.

Efficiency per passenger mile is the big question. I’ll probably be worse than subsonic aircraft, but I’d guess that some of the technologies that make SS travel possible may make subsonic travel more efficient.

We used to go weekly for groceries and spent hundreds per month, but have been consciously changing our buying habits for a couple of years. We’ve now got it down to once every 6 weeks or so for things we can’t easily find elsewhere. At today’s prices we’d probably be spending $450 per month, instead we’re spending about $15, if that.

Questions for the ridiculous number of people on here who are perfectly willing to give up their right to privacy because you believe it makes schools and other places safer:

Have you read the 50+ page user agreement for your cell phone company? How about the user agreements of every app that has access to your cell phone or your PC mic? Late model cars have microphones too, as do TV remotes. I’d give 100 to 1 odds that 99% of you haven’t read any of those user agreements OR the UA for private chat apps you are using. Likewise are you sure any cloud storage you’re using isn’t scanning your documents for forbidden phrases?

Since you haven’t read every word of each and every user agreement and think it keeps schools safe, you should be just fine with the fact that EVERYTHING you say or write may be available to law enforcement, even if you’re talking to yourself while sitting on the toilet in your home. If you mutter that you’d like to kill someone or burn something misheard as a school building to the ground you are just fine with AI flagging it and the police knocking on your door in an hour, right?

The number of people on here who are perfectly willing to give up all their rights and have their private communications monitored for something that is nothing more than security theater is unbelievable.
