It’s pretty well traveled and established so support for it is pretty easy. Fedora comes in both KDE and Gnome varieties. Debian based, though it uses dnf instead of apt for package installer, but that’s not hard. IMHO it’s a good sweet spot of a release cycle. It’s big enough that issues reliably get ironed out before they hit the stable version, but doesn’t trail kernel updates for too terribly long.

Fedora KDE should fit the bill, I think.

Yeah, good to do for web ui, but none of my friends and family ever use the web ui. They are all on TVs. VPNs are probably easier to setup than mTLS if you’re having people use their computers.

Oh, I didn’t mean to say I was using Plex there. Jellyfin + domain + reverse proxy is what I do for both Jellyfin and Seerr. I was just saying people who say “wireguard is the only way to go” aren’t taking into account all workflows, like sharing with family and having them connect via their TVs.

I do both. Wireguard VPN for anything that’s just me. Expose via nginx proxy for things that are shared with friends and family.

I’m saying Linux has a community that likes to talk about tweaking their systems, trying new things, discussing software, discussing distros, etc; Windows does not have users that do that for various reasons. It’s not shade on Linux at all, but to say that they don’t have a community talking about something as mundane as an OS is probably fine for them. I am glad we have the community and user engagement we have surrounding Linux.

I mean, that’s kind of good for them. Not having a creative community that has content to post about means they are just using the OS. The OS is out of the way. I’m guessing the level of comments that Linux gets are more likely to happen on niche forums like powershell or autohotkey or whatever. I dunno, I love my Linux, but do wish it were a little more normal and boring sometimes.

I’m liking it, but there is a lot of work left to do there. I joined today and replicated the small server I run for video game nights with my friends. That part all worked; channels, roles, voice. but the application layer seems to need the most attention. iOS is not there yet and Android needs notification integration. The desktop client has a memory leak. I hope it gets there, but it will be a tough sell to normie friends who can’t handle rough edges. The self hosted version is also behind on the release so it takes some effort to get working (looking to do this but I don’t know if I have the chops to make it work as is)

The bones are there though and hope they get an influx of help given the writing on the wall about Discords imminent continued enshittification.

If you’re known as kind of a dick and you switch to being nice, people will take notice. If you’re being seen as love-bombing, you will be seen as suspect. While I agree men should not be typecast as only sex driven, I’m curious how this part of your argument came into it…

Well this is great. NPM is often the most exposed element of a homelab (even if the management portal itself typically isn’t), it’s a critical security element that an attacker would be able to do all sorts of bad things with access to it.
