PalmPilot Graffiti ftw.
The history lesson is bonus content.

it’s hard to insult the quality of the goods from Temu I’ve seen.

But it’s going to be Temu Minority Report where none of the predictions are true but they make the precrime cops feel really good and validated.

I’ve used chatgpt for book suggestions a couple of times with decent success. The annoying thing is that sometimes it hallucinates really interesting books that don’t exist by authors I like.

Yeah he’s been doing some good stuff lately.

Tangentially relevant: Benn Jordan posted a video about problems with data centers yesterday.

Did you intend to encrypt your comment or was it an accident?

Cars without knobs shouldn’t be allowed. Knobs are awesome.

I see a future where all computing is done in the cloud and home computers are just dumb terminals. An incredibly depressing future. Customers not users is the goal.
I think it was the general lack of consistency. Everything felt a bit messy. This was almost 20 years ago and back then the BSDs had some features that were missing in Linux.
They should laugh. When I switched from FreeBSD to Linux felt it like such a downgrade.
If Ubuntu works for you then that’s good. Don’t listen to the gatekeeping weenies who shit on people for not using arch or whatever. Most of them haven’t built their os from source and are just roleplaying having a unix beard.

Fedora. It’s the one Linus uses.

Looks like it comes with more preinstalled applications and a custom themed gnome desktop. As far as I can find the extra preinstalled applications are available in the default ubuntu repos.
You should try Fedora. It’s the one used by Linus.

Workerware like mouse jigglers and other keepalive tools that lets you focus on work instead of having to keep the screensaver from turning on.
I used FreeBSD for my desktop for a couple of years and it was lovely. I would still be using it if it weren’t for lack of support for my hardware.
I switched because freeBSD didn’t have drivers for my voodoo3 gfx card. I switched to FreeBSD from windows because I messed up my litestep config that was setup to pretend that it was an X desktop and I thought I might as well use the real thing. Dualbooted for a while for games though.
I’ve been using tiling window managers for 15+ years (Mostly awesomewm but also ion/i3). I tried using the tiling extension for GNOME and it was pretty awful. Maybe it has improved since then but last time I checked GNOME still couldn’t handle multiple workspaces on multiple monitors the way I want so that’s a nonstarter for me. I’m currently using Hyprland on Fedora because i3 and sway couldn’t easily replicate some functionality I had in AwesomeWM when I migrated to wayland.
