I’m using Pi-hole for the DNS stuff and Nginx Proxy Manager for the proxying. Super easy to setup as docker containers, with lovely web GUIs for configuration. Works great.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Should I back up perfectly set up distros and restore them on another computer with Clonezilla?
1·7 days agoThe important stuff (my documents, my desktop settings) are in my user’s home folder. That’s what is important. The rest (the Linux distribution) is swappable and replaceable. I keep /etc (the global system configurations) because I sometimes make changes there that I like to keep when distro hopping.

8·7 days agoI mostly backup /home and /etc on my home machines. Anything else I can recreate with configuration-as-code tools like Ansible.

14·10 days agoWindows will not die so easily. Two reasons: 1. Too much money behind and around it. 2. Sheer corporate inertia. 3. As long as there is no competition to the AD/Entra ecosystem, companies will buy it. Ok, three reasons.

31·11 days agoI respectfully disagree. XFCE having the same experience is its main appeal.
AFAIK it’s a project that does not have many developers, so the pace is quite slow, but the reverse side is that there are no surprises. When running production systems you do not want surprises. You want a desktop that lets you work and gets out of the way. That is the reason why XFCE doesn’t get much press but has quite a few satisfied users.

51·12 days agoYou have much to learn about how things work in FLOSS.
Projects don’t die because you and your cool friends decided that they are old news. They will live on as long as there are users and developers interested in keeping them going. There are countless examples, I’m sure you can find some if you get past your short sightedness.

3·15 days agoABS was the last good life-saving technology added to cars. That thing saved my dumb arse several times already.
Now I want to get a new car because the old one is getting too degraded, but I dread the fuckery I’ll find in new models. I just wanted a 3.5 cm audio jack and simple controls. I guess I won’t have much luck.

2·1 month agoMy main server is a puny Raspberry Pi 5 with no disks that still packs a lot of services for my home.
My other server is an ancient 4 core box with an equally old graphics card and a bunch of disks (some spinning, some solid state) arranged in a ZFS array. It handles backups and running a local nasty tempered LLM modelled after GlaDOS.

1·1 month agoWhen I see people drive them, I wonder why you would buy such a thing.
After a few years on this country’s hole filled roads and stone paved streets, they start to break down and develop a distinct squeaking noise, indicating that the build quality is not good at all.
Still, I think it’s more of a fashion statement from vain people that will trade it for a new car in 4 years, so build quality does not matter. It says “Look, peasants, I have an imported american car. Envy me, you Peugeot driving scum.”

1431·2 months agoYesterday I watched Spain - Belgium on a live stream on Prime Video. The same stream was available on Netflix and YouTube.
It was like live TV, but properly enshitified. Instead of professional journalists and commenters, you get streamers reacting to the game, improper comments, like and subscribe notices, publicity every time the ball stops, paid viewer comments overlayed on the broadcast. A complete shitstorm.
I realized that this is what the future of live TV looks like. So I think I’m done with it.
