dude I had more lettuce than I could possibly eat just from the volunteers in my 4x8 planter that I didn’t bother pulling out because I couldn’t reach the other side. beans and peas and tomatoes and asparagus and lettuce and cabbage and onions and chives and raspberries all have volume in the <100sqft I’ve given them all
yes, gardening at this scale is a hobby and won’t really save you money/time. but don’t pretend it can’t have a real impact on the source of your food.
if more people did this instead of have a manicured lawn, the rabbits in the neighbourhood would be eating good

Having a hobby is good, nobody is saying that. Pretending that your hobby is actually a community service is not. You’re not more or less of a people connector and community builder when you chat to your discord kittens from the basement than when you sit ass up picking weeds on your driveway cucumber patch.
You eat your five tomatoes that you’ve spend 10 months growing of course. Other people will eat food that they bought with strike funds they allocated prior to a strike. They could’ve told you about those but you were too busy growing tomatoes on your driveway.
Those strike funds last a lot longer if the workers know how canning their own food works. And they last even longer than that if they grew it themselves.
Gardening is literally THE proletarian “hobby”, because more often than not, you grow more than you need. Meaning you can share. Mutual aid, see?
Also, five tomatoes? I dunno what kind of under watered little vines you’ve been growing, we pulled nearly three pounds of tomatoes from our garden from just three plants. And I barely did any weeding this year. That’s enough for some damn good vodka marinara.
I lived off the land in my youth, so I know exactly what is needed to grow food. I know how much land you need to feed a family, I know how much work it is to feed a family. You can spare me with “growing more than needed” bullshit, you have more than you need because you need zero. “It’s not five tomatoes, it’s almost kilo and a half” is exactly what I’m talking about. I’m happy for you that you’re doing it, growing tomatoes is nice and fun if you’re into that sort of things, and it’s might be the only way to actually get your hands on good tomatoes this days.
