In a partnership with Deezer, Winamp will be reborn as a completely new player with its own premium subscription service, with Deezer providing the white-label streaming technology and licensed catalog.
So, basically a nostalgic skin for Deezer.
And Deezer is owned by a Russian Oligarch who was personally sanctioned by Ukraine for profiting off of the war.
This is not the Winamp you’re looking for.
It’s coming back with a monthly subscription.
It’s dead already, then. WinAmp’s heritage was providing a free audio player. I was looking forward to a refreshed build to test out, but I won’t pay for it.
There are a dozen better, free, maintained, and actively developed players out there. This is less than too little, and far too late. Those of us who used winamp back when it was still activly developed will continue to have nostalgia for it, but I bet it will be DOA to most of the target audience.
I’ve only kept up on news for it because I was hoping it would be reborn true to itself. I have zero interest in it as a subscription model.
it appears to be just an added optional feature, a winamp-branded deezer subscription and client, with the traditional local play and customization and what-not still part of the ‘free’ program (presumably… details are scarce).
but… i left winamp years ago. i won’t go back. i have playlists sorted and can just use vlc these days. idc about customizing or visualizations and that shit. i just want a player to sit in the background and do its thing. there’s dozens of acceptable programs without a subscription sales pitch built in.

It sounds like the local playback is the “optional” feature. That’s still gonna be a no, at least for me. Fpr Hifi, I’ll stick with FooBar2k, or something that is a proper hi-res FLAC player first and has bolt-ons/plugins second. The same article also links to another, they actually already released a new build of classic winamp a few years ago.

Yeah, I loved winamp back in the day, but it’s been a quarter of a century and now it’s primary purpose (the ability to play mp3’s) is no longer it’s primary purpose. If I’m looking for another music player, it’s primary purpose needs to be playing music files, not trying to convince me to sign up for another shitty service.
The MP3 era’s favorite player returns with a monthly subscription.

Last time I heard about a Winamp reboot it was a Bandcamp ripoff with added cryptoslop. While this seems marginally better it’s still pretty disappointing.
Deezer seems alright as a streaming service, though, and they’re French so there’s that.
These owners are just whatever lawyers have gotten ahold of the WinAMP trademark.
Anybody remember when they attempted to push out the source code for WinAMP on GitHub and failed miserably? Or included NFTs?

VLC or Foobar2k?
Personally, I’ve always stuck to VLC. Although Foobar2k’s built-in playlists and directory scanning makes for a nice lightweight iTunes.

Anyway, the old versions of Winamp work just fine for playing your local library.
It still exists. I run radio 24/7 with Shoutcast.
Nullsoft’s streaming server? I ran a web radio stream for a small group of friends for a short time using it. Pretty sure the only reason I ever became aware of it was Winamp’s built-in station browser. It made me wanna learn how it worked. I can’t remember anymore but I assume Shoutcast must’ve had a “publish” type option to make them show up in the list. That stream browser also introduced me to the demoscene (there was a website that broadcast various demos) and expanded my tastes in music across so many genres. RIP to Wazee and Digital Gunfire. At least SomaFM and Digitally Imported are still hanging on.
Do you remember RipCast? Before I learned where else to look, and when #mp3z on IRC failed me, I’d use it just to be able to save those unobtainable songs. Like a digital equivalent to leaving a cassette recording the radio in hopes of snagging a few songs you wanted to keep.
Will be reborn? If they had actually released Winamp under a real open source licence, it would have been reborn years ago! A bit late for it now!
A few years ago someone bought and updated the old Winamp. Works with skins and no idea if visualizer support but I lost track of the project.

After the “open source” fakeout that was nothing more than them trying to get free work without actually opening the source code for anyone to use, Winamp and Llamasoft or whatever their name is can get bent by an elephant.
I won’t even use an old copy in Wine at this point. They fucked up repeatedly and now nostalgia isn’t what it used to be. Get fucked, losers of Winamp.
