Guy I used to work with would intentionally break off the latch on every cable he touched, rendering this question moot.
I always circumcise my RJ45 connectors before plugging them in.
Great, now I’m going to call these RJ45 foreskins.
I’m a no boot man, causes more issues then they solve.
There’s a secret third option I didn’t include

One on the right, when asked about “some switches”:

Neither. I choose neither.
The one on the left gets the utility knife circumcision.
If you cut the bottom of the hood halfway, it protects the tab but still squishes to disconnect. I’ve lost too many tabs to the full circumcision.
Neither, cable boots are a pain in the ass no matter the design.
